What experience do I need to practice Qigong? None. In Qigong the instructor leads the practice and the class follows using both visual and verbal cues. Everyone works within the capacities of their individual bodies, and since nothing should hurt in Qigong, modification is encouraged and expected.
What can I expect from a Qigong class?
Qigong is an amazing practice for health, healing and inspiration.
Each session is comprised of breathing, stretching, and a series of flowing movements that are very easy to learn. These movements are repeated in different sequences and can have a profound effect on internal energy capacity and sensation. It is one of the oldest systems of energy medicine, and one that has been proven over thousands of years to heal illness, reduce stress, slow the effects of aging and achieve longevity. The best part is that you’ll feel the benefits right away – you will be energized and relaxed at the same time. This is a time to relax and enjoy just being you.
What do I wear for a Qigong class? Comfortable clothes that allow for bending, stretching and a full range of movement in the upper body. The practice is generally done barefoot, but there are times when socks or sneakers might be appropriate.
Do I need a mat? Qigong Medley and Qigong for Better Balance classes are all standing classes. Qigong Easy is designed so that it can be done sitting or standing. The Tao Yin form may involve floor work , so you will want a mat available for these classes.
What if standing for a long time is a problem? The practice can easily be adapted to a seated one, so no one should feel that they cannot participate if standing for long periods is of concern.
What is are the 5 Elements in Qigong? In Chinese philosophy the Five Elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water are the five basic aspects of Qi, or life energy. These five elements are interconnected and interdependent. The harmonious balance of ‘the five elements’ are key components of a healthy life. In Qigong, we work with the differing energies, emotions, organs, and seasons related to each of these elements. Understanding and integrating these elements into the overall practice deepens the experience for the student.
What is the difference between Yoga and Qigong? Qigong is an ancient practice that originated in China, while yoga originated in India. Both include breathing practices and meditation, but each practice starts in a different place: In Qigong, the focus is feeling and moving one’s internal energy first, then stretching and holding postures to allow it to flow. In Yoga, the initial focus is stretching and moving into postures and then feeling the energy. The Qigong classes that are standing do not require the up and down off the floor that is often found in a Yoga practice.
"I have been practicing with Joyce since she began teaching Qigong in June of 2017, and now practice 2-4 times a week. Qigong has brought a balance and centeredness to my personal and professional life. I find myself performing moves throughout the day whenever I think of it. I will practice in my yard, at the beach and most recently while waiting at the hair salon!! "~ Dianne
"Being a new student of Qigong, I'm blessed to have Joyce as my instructor - providing a variety of Qigong moves that nourishes my inner spirit and outer health. Through the magic of Zoom, it is like having your personal Qigong instructor in your home. Her guidance and verbal imagery is heaven on earth. Thank you Joyce." ~ Rose
"To me, Qigong is a supportive community, a spirit lifting practice, and a way to stay moving, breathing and balancing in life! "~ Maura
"I’ve started doing a few Qigong moves every morning, and I notice that getting in and out of the car, bending over to pick things up, and standing while I cook are all getting easier." ~ Steve
"I have been practicing with Joyce since early in 2020.. She is enthusiastic and very sensitive to our needs. Her direction for our movement is very clear. Joyce will tell us how to adapt the practice if we have physical issues. What started as something for me “ to do” has transformed into a necessary part of my self care routine." ~ Dawn
"I’ve had the pleasure of practicing Qigong with Joyce for almost 3 years. Joyce is a wonderful teacher, she tailors ever class to the needs of her students, and is always adding new skills. I started practicing in person, but transitioned to remote practice at the start of the pandemic. Practicing via Zoom has been great. Joyce is able to effectively show everything she does, and let you know what you need to adjust. Plus, I still get to see and talk to everyone I’m practicing with, but with the added benefit of not having to drive anywhere. "
~ Patti
I’ve never had great balance or considered myself a graceful person, but after doing Joyce’s balance class weekly, my balance has drastically improved. I can stand on one foot while doing a variety of moves nearly effortlessly, and also move with a truly surprising amount of strength and grace. Joyce has classes suitable for everyone and every mood. I highly recommend giving Qigong with Joyce a try regardless of age and ability. You’ll love it, and find your own grace and balance!" ~ Jen
